Age is everything for kids but means nothing for adults

How old are they? That's usually the first thing people ask when they meet our daughters for the first time.

When someone meets our daughters for the first time, the No. 1 question is always, "How old are they?"

Somewhere on the journey from childhood to adulthood, however, this question about age goes from most important to among the least important. [more]

I used to be a cat person but now I'm not so sure

Our oldest daughter is definitely showing signs of being a dog person, which is evident in this photo from this past summer, when we visited my parents and their dog Fanny.

I know there are cat people and there are dog people. But can you go from being one type to the other? That's what I did, I think. [more]

Visitor in land of orange holidays

The colors of our dining table tend to lean toward the orange part of the spectrum this time of year. This was our Thanksgiving dinner in 2007.

This time of year, I usually feel like a visitor in a land of orange holidays.

When I grew up in Sweden, Halloween and Thanksgiving were nothing more than a couple of small annotations on the calendar so for me, these two holidays don't conjure up any childhood memories. [more]

I see a future stylist

I've been wearing my fedora more often lately, which is a fashion decision that seems to be favored by our youngest daughter, the hat connoisseur and future stylist.

Calling all fruit foodies, if there are any out there

IKEA serves its famous meatballs with lingonberry jam, which is the dark red substance at nine o'clock on the plate I enjoyed during our Sweden trip this past summer.

I love fruit in my food. Not just with my food but in my food.

I don't know of many other Americans that share this particular taste. Zee does not. As a matter of fact, most people I talk to crinkle their nose and look at me in disbelief when I tell them about my affinity for adding fruit to food.

Is it just me? Am I the only one who likes fruit in my food? [more]

Five things I don't want them to learn from me

New York, with its Times Square, is one of my favorite places to visit. I want our daughters to travel too, as long as they come back home.

The other day, I thought about the random mix of genes Zee and I have passed on to our two children and how we can only hope that they got all the good ones and none of the bad ones.

Character, on the other hand, has nothing to do with genes. It's learned. Here's a list of five things that are part of my character that I'd rather not pass on to our kids. [more]

Waving guidelines for men

If you're watching a Christmas parade, like our family did last year here in Kapolei, it's OK to wave to the floats as long as you're with your kids.

I know there are guidelines that dictate how guys should greet each other in the men's room — a wordless nod and that's it — but I've never come across any waving guidelines for men.

My brother-in-law authored such guidelines via text message after a waving incident on the road last week. They're pretty good. [more]

Amazon's device lives up to its name, re-kindles reading

The paperback I'm currently reading now shares bedside shelf space with my new Kindle 3.

My wife gave me a Kindle 3 yesterday and it got me back into reading before I even opened a book on the device.

Because our family routines have been in flux lately, I've sacrificed reading. That changed last night. [more]

My five favorite iPhone apps

Don't worry, iPhone 3GS. I won't trade you for an iPhone 4.

In last night's "Hawaii Five-0" episode, there was a scene that made me want to upgrade my year-old iPhone 3GS.

It also made me think about how I use my phone, though, and I realized I don't really need much. As a matter of fact, if I don't count the telephone function as an app, I can easily list five essential apps. [more]

Looking for good family picnic spots

Our beach picnic dinner today at Ko Olina was a mix of food brought from home and a couple of Happy Meals from McDonald's.

We're having a lot of picnics nowadays. Today, we decided to have a beach picnic and drove out to one of the Ko Olina lagoons for an early dinner.

Most of our picnics take place in our neighborhood park. After today's beach picnic, though, I was thinking that maybe we should go beyond the park setting more often. What are some good picnic spots here on O'ahu? Do you have a personal favorite? [more]
