Nonstop party reminder of social media's real power

Malika Dudley from Hawaii News Now was the emcee for Nonstop Honolulu's launch party tonight at Ka Restaurant & Lounge.

Germans say kids aren't really into the Internet, after all

Both our daughters have some basic understanding of how to operate our laptops and iPhones. They love to look at Zee's Facebook photo albums and point out themselves or family members.

If you're a parent of tweens, you might be desperate to understand this new world that your kids live in, this special digital realm that is so strange to you and so familiar to them.

Breaking up with a hottie named Gowalla

This screenshot of the Gowalla iPhone app demonstrates shows an example of how a virtual bonus item is rewarded a user who checks in to one of the millions of user-created spots in the Gowalla network. The items are often related to current events. In this case, I got an NBA Finals Trophy in May this year.

I was so into Gowalla that one morning in December, I got up an hour and a half early and drove 30 miles to the far end of Lanikai, just so I could retrieve an item that was missing from my collection.

Gowalla became an obsession and a social obligation. As with all of my obsessions, though, this affair eventually crashed and burned. Today I deleted the app from my iPhone. [more]

Twitter flew over the cuckoo's nest

Twitter was off-kilter yesterday. The adorable blue bird didn't see the flagpole. Or maybe it choked on too many cheerful chirps. In the words of Mashable, the micro-blogging service was "in a weird limbo."

It got me thinking about the ridiculous power this company has.

What would we do without Twitter? How would we get word out so quickly to such a massive audience? [more]
