We filed these posts under the category of The darndest things

Kids really do say the darndest things and our daughters are no exception. We’ll take note of some of those things and jot them down as blog posts here in this category. Because our baby girl isn’t really talking yet, these posts are mostly based on what our oldest daughter says.

'The words are in my head'

In this video, our oldest daughter explains how she spells her name.

Our oldest daughter spelled her name for the first time yesterday and we asked her how she learned to do that.

"The words are in my head," she said. "The letters are in my head. So that's why they come down to my eyes so I can see them. Real well." [more]

'They're dancing aloha'

Our oldest daughter wanted to mimic what she saw in the mural at Zippy's Kapolei and came through with a pretty good hula improvisation.

When we were at Zippy's on Sunday, our oldest daughter spent a lot of time studying the mural painting next to our table at the far end of the restaurant.

After a while, she pointed to the wall depiction of a Hawaiian cultural scene and said, "They're eating and they're dancing aloha." [more]

Caption contest: Our new plastic neighbors and their baby

The captions were written for this photo.

So, our house is no longer the only one in our townhouse complex with Christmas lights.

Some of the displays our neighbors have put up are also visible in daylight, such as the little nativity scene we passed on our way to the park early Saturday. Our daughters were intrigued. [more]

Sleeping Beauty brings peace to the house

"Look, I'm Sleeping Beauty!"

On Saturday, our oldest daughter turned into Sleeping Beauty.

Zee was tickled, because Princess Aurora, a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty, was her favorite Disney princess when she was a little girl. I was tickled too, because I soon realized that there were some benefits to this situation. [more]

I see a future stylist

I've been wearing my fedora more often lately, which is a fashion decision that seems to be favored by our youngest daughter, the hat connoisseur and future stylist.

Caption contest: Exploring the globe

The caption suggestions this week were written for this photo.

This past weekend, our 3-year-old daughter showed a lot of interest in our globe, which I'll bring out on occasion in an effort to seize a teaching moment.

The sudden globe enthusiasm started on Saturday, when our daughter and I were singing a Swedish children's song together and it must have reminded her of Farmor, her Swedish grandmother. [more]

'Is it very, very good?'

Our oldest daughter carefully scrutinized her Lego tower to make sure it was good. Actually, to make sure it was very, very good.

Our oldest daughter is discovering the parts of speech that deal with emphasis. It's not enough to say that something is good, or even very good.

It needs to be a little more than that. [more]

Sugar and cake and everything baked

Our oldest daughter has no problem clearing the cake from her plate.

Our oldest daughter loves cake. She loves it so much that at the end of a busy day crammed full of activities, when I ask her what her favorite part of the day was, she'll tap her chin a couple of times with her finger and say, "Hmm ... the cake!" [more]

'I wanna be the winner!'

Whenever our daughters are running around together, it's not uncommon to hear our oldest cry out, "I wanna be the winner!"

Our oldest daughter is getting more and more competitive. Nowadays, we can hardly get ready to leave the house without hearing her little battle cry as she dashes for the front door: "I wanna be the winner!"

I've been pretty competitive too in my days, so I can definitely relate to this drive. Still, I want my kids to be collaborative rather than competitive, and I'm trying to find a balance. [more]

'Am happy now!'

amhappynowvideo

At some point in the past two or three weeks, our youngest daughter adopted the habit of reporting to us whenever she's in a good mood.

It usually comes out of the blue: "Am happy now!"

Sometimes, this mood report is an expression of relief on her part that she finally got what she wanted. Other times, it's just an extension of happy behavior in general. [more]
