Summer in Sweden: Train ride to Vänersborg

IMG_0117

On Sunday, we rode a train from Gothenburg to a town called Vänersborg to visit the girls' great-grandmother and to celebrate her 94th birthday. Vänersborg, an hour north of Gothenburg, is the town where Andreas grew up. [more]

Summer in Sweden: Our home away from home

Summering in Sweden has become an annual tradition for our family. For the past four years, we've spent a couple weeks with Andreas' parents in Gothenburg. It's always a wonderful experience, an opportunity for our two girls to reconnect with their Swedish family and heritage, and a chance for me to satisfy my wanderlust. [more]

Night drive brings back memories, brings home ice cream

Last night's crescent moon kept me company on my drive to Safeway to get some ice cream for Zee. No, she's not pregnant.

Last night, I drove to Safeway to get some ice cream for Zee (who is not pregnant, by the way) and I ended up taking a ride in my mind.

When I came back home, I felt strangely relaxed and calm. At peace, almost. I didn't even know this kind of solitary reflection was something I needed. [more]

Date Day at IKEA ...

Mmmm. I was so happy. Instead of mashed potatoes, I had my meatballs with fries. And for dessert, I devoured a heart-shaped strawberry cake. The entire meal for both of us was about $10.

I think it's safe to say our trips to IKEA — founded in Sweden in 1943 — will become a "Date Day" tradition whenever we travel to Gothenburg. Andreas and I once again enjoyed roaming the massive furniture store imagining how we would furnish and decorate our dream home, and eating in IKEA's famous restaurant. [more]

Playgrounds offer something old, something new

"I go high up in the sky, all by myself!"

It's surprising how little variation there is in playgrounds. I guess all kids are wired the same way in terms of exercising their little arms and legs.

Gothenburg, along with the rest of Sweden, is no exception.

We saw a couple of unusual design twists on the old playground concept but overall, the offerings in the residential area where my parents live are very similar to what our daughters are used to back home in Hawai'i.
